Evaluation and Scoring
We have yet to encounter a pet who tells us where it hurts! - - although in the case of surgery we often do know where it hurts (or will hurt). The first step of any successful pain management plan is a detailed conversation with the owner and a complete physical examination of the pet to illuminate its specific needs. Scoring pain can be a challenge but several validated scales do exist for animals, and we use these scales to gauge the pet’s current status and response to treatment.
